When it comes to moving the body – there really is no such thing as isolating a body part and exercising it – not in my mind anyway, because there is always other stuff happening in the body… even if it is the work of gravity or stabilization of a muscle to enable lengthening and/or shortening on another muscle.
When it comes to yogic poses, there is so much happening in many parts of the body. Take Tadasana for example (Mountain pose), if somebody were to look at you doing this particular pose they may wonder what it is you are exactly doing, because to them it perhaps looks like you are actually doing nothing… Remember there is much doing in the seemingly non-doing!
And so… I think it is extremely important to learn a pose in isolation prior to executing it during a flow practice – this way you can really know how the pose suits your body, and how the pose feels when you move into it during different sequences. This also ensures safety and effective action of your yoga practice.
