Yes I know, you’ve heard it all before – the whole ‘take time out’, ‘stress is the biggest killer,’ etc etc etc… and no doubt you are yawning as you read, like you are reading the equivalent of a broken record in a blog post format… because if you open any health mag or lifestyle mag or chat to a professional or friends and family, they will probably say the same right? “Stress! You have to chill out!”
And why my I ask, in this wonderful modern world, with all the abundance and beauty, do we still find it difficult to just be? How come every other person is on high stress alert? Look I’m guilty of it too – so please do not think that I am preaching, I am just saying that surely if we give this whole stress thing a miss, life will be – it has got to be – a lot easier!
Holiday season is fast approaching – I love Christmas – and yet no doubt there will be more stress than joy… What presents to buy? Who to share Christmas day with? How to avoid the family member you so need to avoid in order to stay sane?
Take a holiday… OH NO BUT THE COST! THE TIME OFF WORK! WHERE TO GO! WHAT TO PACK!
And when you do finally stop bloody stressing over the tiny things that would actually be better to be excited about –anxiety feels pretty similar to excitement sometimes – so you make the choice… Yep, when you finally sort out that well needed family vacation, the location, the packing and the rest, the question I would actually like to ask now is… Do you really go on vacation?
Yes there may be sun, sand, activity, family, food, new scenery, boats, planes, bikes, and the rest – but how much are you soaking up? Do you switch off the phone, leave the watch at home, refuse to be tempted by social networking? When it comes to all of this, it can wait, it will be there when you get back, and the likelihood is that nobody will miss your updates or even mine… but those gorgeous memories you will create by taking it all in, embracing those moments – they will be missed!
Next time you go on holiday, take a proper break from work and worries, and do something fun, crazy or amazing… or just be.
Yes life can be ‘stressful’, but we often make our own stress more stressful, and is it really stressful compared with some of the nasty stuff going on in the world?
Facing life’s challenges and dealing with it all, is a lot easier if you really properly take time out and rest and recoup.
