What yoga means to me is simple – it is all I have ever known, yet I never had a label for it… and so yoga is everything and yet it is nothing. The ‘doing’ and the ‘not-doing’ of life unfold from the creases of the earth, similar to rolling out of my yoga mat.
The meaning for me has not changed, but now I have a word to match what I’ve always felt deep down to be real, and to be true. I have found like-minded people, I have found knowledgeable and humble teachers, a space to learn, I have found the philosophies and I am finding myself.
The goodness and pure way of living that yoga offers every person, is more than a concept. Yoga embraces all, and it is this non-discriminate practice that I gravitate to… because people are just people – we are strong, yet we are fragile.
Yoga has opened my eyes and mind even more than they already are. It has raised my understanding of other people’s relationship to their choice of god, and how we all are just on different paths to the same destination. It could be this lifetime or in several when we reach it. This notion is exciting. It is comforting. It eliminates fear of the ‘what if?’ Or the ‘what’s next?’ Allowing one to truly live in the moment.
Yoga is a natural part of everything living and manifested in this world and this dimension, as we know them. Yoga is I, is you, is me, is us, is he, is she… We created it. We feed it and it feeds us.
Those that have truly found yoga as a way of life – know it’s importance – and those that are yet to find it, are touched by it daily, and this is how wonderful yoga is… because it works on everybody even through blissful ignorance i.e. the smile the sunshine brings, the calm a deep breath offers, and the positive effect of kindness.
Yoga breaks us, and it builds us. It frees us, and it cages us… Yoga is a contradiction – and this is fine – because contradictions are experiences, and experiences are where we learn… so this highlights that it is in action and practice where we learn the most.
Yoga makes us think, and yet it stops us from thinking too through meditation. It shows us to flow; yet we are also to let go. Yoga is life, yoga is afterlife, and it is in-between life. We create our universe through yogic states because it is when in the highest state of consciousness we can see clearly and manifest matter. And so the more awareness we have of the elements of self and the universe, the better our collective world will be. Within the contradictions of yoga resides the balance, and because this balance (Hatha) for each individual is different, yoga is no longer a place of contradiction, but one of choice, one of inclusion, and one of clarity, (‘clarity’ is used in honour of KM of Moving Om, Canberra, Australia).
